Survey planning
The right evidence.
At the right time.
Use this as an early planning guide, then ask us to confirm a survey programme for your site.
| Survey or consideration | Typical timing | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary ecological appraisal & UKHab | Often possible throughout the year | Botanical detail and habitat condition may require a growing-season visit. |
| Preliminary bat roost assessment | Often possible throughout the year | Access, weather and the building or tree features influence the assessment. |
| Bat emergence surveys | Usually May–September | The appropriate number, timing and spacing depend on the assessment and current guidance. |
| Great crested newt eDNA | Usually 15 April–30 June | Sampling must follow the applicable protocol and suitable pond conditions. |
| Reptile surveys | Usually spring and early autumn | Temperature, weather and refuge preparation are important. |
| Botanical & grassland surveys | Usually spring–summer | Timing varies with habitat, target plants and survey purpose. |
| Breeding bird considerations | Often March–August | This is an indicative period. Active nests can occur outside it. |
| Freshwater ecology | Method and season dependent | Fish, invertebrates, macrophytes and other surveys require separate planning. |
Indicative only. Survey windows are not guarantees of suitability and do not replace site-specific advice, current guidance or any necessary permissions.
