What a community can tell us
River invertebrate communities provide evidence about ecological conditions. The RIVPACS approach compares the fauna observed at a site with an expectation for a similar site under reference conditions. This is more informative than assuming that the same number of taxa should occur in every river.
Make comparisons meaningful
UKCEH explains that expected fauna varies with environmental setting and season. Field methods, habitat coverage and identification level also need to be consistent with the assessment method. A result from one season should not casually be compared with a different-season result as though any difference must indicate deterioration.
Choose the purpose first
For the UKTAG WHPT/RICT classification method, spring and autumn sampling form the standard annual minimum described in the method statement. Other questions—such as a particular species, an incident or a pond assemblage—may require a different design. Agree the question, method and supporting environmental measurements before collecting samples, and interpret results alongside flow and habitat information.
